Information was generated through a critical review of secondary data from national education reports, national basic education statistics and the 2016–2021 Education Sector Development Plan. The article reviews and documents trends in access and students’ dropout rates, number of teachers and qualified teaching staff ratio, as well as students’ performance in national examinations. The basic education in Tanzania comprises pre-primary, primary and ordinary level secondary education. ![]() This article establishes the achievements and hurdles of accessing and participating in basic education in Tanzania, covering the period from 2010 to 2019. These inequalities are attributable to, among others, socio-economic status, parental low level of education, poverty, and social-cultural factors (Anangisye 2020 García and Weiss 2017 Humble and Dixon 2017 Kapinga 2014). While these remain a fact, literature shows that several inequalities exist in the world education systems which negatively impact children's access to and participation in education as evident in terms of the enrolment rates, learning and learning outcomes (García and Weiss 2017 Suarez-Orozco et al. 227) that "school-age children, irrespective of their physical and mental status, race, colour, culture, political affiliation, religious ideology, gender, or socioeconomic status have the right to basic education…". These declarations and commitments at global level entail that access to and participation in education is the right of every child as enlightened by Anangisye (2020, p. Other initiatives which strived to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education as a right of all individuals include the 1990's World Conference on Education for All (EFA) and Sustainable Development Goal 4. ![]()
